The mechanism of action of 2-cyanoacetamide is not fully understood, but it has been shown to have a metabolic effect, which may be due to its inhibition of the synthesis of phospholipids. 2-Cyanothioacetamide also has antimicrobial properties, which are likely due to its ability to react with chloride or sodium salts and release hydrogen chloride gas.
