(2-Carbamoylphenoxy)acetic acid is a synthetic chemical compound that has been found to have postharvest antibacterial activity. The molecule is unidentate, which means it binds to the target through only one of its functional groups. This compound is a carboxylate, an organic acid with a carbonyl group and hydroxyl group. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by inhibiting their ability to synthesize proteins. The molecule's intramolecular hydrogen bonds may also play a role in its antibacterial activity. (2-Carbamoylphenoxy)acetic acid is not active against yeasts or molds, but has shown some activity against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes.
