2-Chloro-5-aminophenol is a chemical compound that has been shown to have carcinogenic properties. It is an aniline derivative and it reacts with chlorine to form a singlet oxygen (1O2) radical, which is the reactive species that reacts with DNA. 2-Chloro-5-aminophenol has been shown to react with oxalyl chloride and trifluoromethyl chloride in the presence of light to give an epoxide product. This epoxide product can be hydrolyzed by sodium acetate extract to give methylbenzene, which can be irradiated by UV light to produce a carcinogenic nitrosamine.
