5-Carboxybenzoboroxole is an anti-tuberculosis drug that belongs to the class of molybdenum complexes. It has been shown to be active against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, with a high efficiency in vitro and in vivo. 5-Carboxybenzoboroxole binds to the mycobacterial cell wall by inserting itself into the lipid bilayer, which causes disruption of the cell membrane and leakage of intracellular contents. This drug also interacts with sulfur atoms on the surface of mycobacteria, which leads to a change in conformation and facilitates its elution from the cell surface. 5-Carboxybenzoboroxole is able to enter mycobacterial cells through pores, or extracellular vesicles, and it can be used as an anti-inflammatory agent because it inhibits prostaglandin synthesis.
