2-Chloro-3-methylpyrazine is a compound that is used as an antimicrobial agent in the food industry. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of filamentous fungi by interfering with the biosynthesis of ergosterol, which is a major component of fungal cell membranes. 2-Chloro-3-methylpyrazine binds to the enzyme pyruvic transaminase and prevents it from converting pyruvate into acetaldehyde and then ethanol. This leads to accumulation of toxic acetaldehyde, which causes cell death. 2-Chloro-3-methylpyrazine has also been shown to have antihypertensive effects and may be useful in the treatment of heart disease.
