4-Chloro-2-methylphenol is a phenoxy compound that is used in wastewater treatment. It has been shown to be an effective agent for the removal of fatty acids from wastewater, and can also be used for the removal of organic matter from water. 4-Chloro-2-methylphenol binds with bacterial strains and inhibits their growth by interfering with enzyme activities. The mechanism of its action involves the formation of stable complexes with hydroxyl groups on enzymes, which blocks the active site and prevents enzymatic activity. The reaction mechanism is similar to that of other phenoxy compounds, such as 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). 4-Chloro-2-methylphenol reacts with alkanoic acid or dinucleotide phosphate to form an acid group p2 and an alkanoic acid group p1. The surface methodology used in this process is a gas chromatography technique called electron capture
