2-Cyano-5-methylpyridine is a chiral, gaseous compound that is a derivative of 4-cyanopyridine. It can be synthesized by the ammonolysis of 2-amino-5-chloropyridine with ammonia and hydrochloric acid in the presence of a catalyst. The reaction rate for this compound is dependent on the flow system used to carry the reactants to the reaction site. This compound has an asymmetric carbon atom, which makes it a chiral molecule. It has two different isomers, one with two methyl groups and one with three methyl groups. 2-Cyano-5-methylpyridine can be synthesized from pyridine rings, methyl groups, and heterocycles through functional theory.
