It is used as a precursor to other chemicals such as 2,4,6-trichlorophenol. 2-Chloro-p-xylene reacts with chloride gas in the presence of hydrochloric acid to produce chlorobenzene, which has been shown to be biocompatible and used for diagnostic purposes.
