It reacts with DNA and produces 1-chloro-2, 4-dinitrobenzene, which causes genotoxic effects. 1-Chloromethylpyrene has been shown to be effective against v79 cells and hamster v79 cells in vitro. In vivo, it was observed to produce an inflammatory response in the liver of animals. This compound also caused nuclear DNA damage and inhibited enzyme activities in animals.
