Cyclopentanol is a cyclic ester with the molecular formula CH3COCH2. It is a colorless liquid that has a pleasant odor and is soluble in organic solvents and water. Cyclopentanol has been shown to be resistant to high temperatures, which may be due to its metastable form. This compound has also been shown to have an optimum pH of 10-11, with the rate of reaction increasing as the pH increases. Cyclopentanol can be synthesized by using sodium salts as catalysts, or by using cyclopentene and cyclopentyl as starting materials. The thermal expansion coefficient for this compound is around 1 × 10^-5K^-1, which means it expands about one part in ten thousand when heated.
