4-Carboxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine 1-Oxyl Free Radical (4CATEMPO) is a chemical compound with a molecular weight of 236.5 Da and a chemical formula of C8H14NO3. 4CATEMPO has been shown to be an effective cavity enhancer for coumarin derivatives. It has also been used in natural polymer synthesis as an amphipathic molecule that can form hydrogen bonds with hydroxyl groups on the surface of cellulose derivatives such as methylcellulose or hydroxyethylcellulose. This molecule has also been found to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus strains by binding to copper ions and forming metal surface complexes. In addition, 4CATEMPO is lipophilic due to its two hydrophobic functional groups and can be formulated into liposomal preparations for drug delivery applications.
