Cyclopentyl methyl ether is an experimental solvent that has been found to be soluble in water and trifluoroacetic acid. It is chemically stable and thermodynamically stable. Cyclopentyl methyl ether is toxic, with a LD50 of greater than 5 g/kg when administered orally to rats. The solvents may cause irritation and damage to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. The solvent may react with acids or bases to form salts. These salts are usually insoluble in water, which limits their toxicity. Cyclopentyl methyl ether is not toxic to enzymes or cells; however, it can inhibit enzymatic reactions by competing with other reagents for enzyme binding sites.
