2-Chloro-2-Fluoro-N-[2-(4-Nitrophenyl)Ethyl]Acetamide is an inhibitor of the enzyme tryptophan hydroxylase. It is a competitive inhibitor, which binds to the same site on the enzyme as the natural substrate, L-tryptophan. The binding of 2CFFAA to tryptophan hydroxylase prevents the conversion of L-tryptophan to 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT). This inactivation results in a decrease in serotonin levels and can lead to depression. 2CFFAA has been shown to be effective in vitro against a number of strains of bacteria and fungi, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans.
2CFFAA is not active against rat liver mitochondrial or microsomal preparations, but it does inhibit human urinary 5HT hydroxylase activity.
