1-Chloro-4-[1-(4-chlorophenyl)-2,2,2-trifluoroethyl]benzene (1CTFE) is an alkylating agent that can be used to measure the desorption of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from soil and ground water. 1CTFE is added to the soil or ground water at a concentration of 1000 ppm. The VOCs in the soil or ground water are then converted into chlorinated derivatives that are more stable and less volatile than the original VOCs. This conversion process is called activation, which means that the VOCs are transformed into activated species.
