2,2'-Dithiodiethanol is a chemical compound that has been shown to be stable in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid and particle. 2,2'-Dithiodiethanol reacts with sodium carbonate to form disulfide bonds, which are important for redox potentials. This stability is due to its high redox potential. Disulfide bonds are also important for mitochondrial membrane potential and protein synthesis. The reaction of 2,2'-dithiodiethanol with ferrocenecarboxylic acid yields ferrocene-2-thiol, which is a fluorescent probe used in biochemical studies and chemical biology. 2,2'-Dithiodiethanol can react with basic proteins to form transfer reactions.
