6,7-Dihydro-4(5H)-benzofuranone is a human pathogen that has been shown to be involved in colorectal carcinoma. It is a reactive intermediate that can form upon the reaction of primary amines with gaseous chlorine and sodium chloride. 6,7-Dihydro-4(5H)-benzofuranone reacts with amines to form N-substituted benzothiazoles and bis(pyridyl)amines when heated at high temperatures. 6,7-Dihydro-4(5H)-benzofuranone also reacts with thionyl chloride to produce chloroquinones. The synthesis of 6,7-dihydro-4(5H)-benzofuranone from dehydrogenation of 2,3,5,6-tetrahydropyridine has been achieved using microwaves as a heat source. 6
