It functions as a chaperone and prevents the aggregation of proteins. 2,5-Dimethylbenzyl chloride has been shown to cause epidermal growth in mice and humans. This chemical also interacts with epidermal growth factor (EGF) by forming a complex with this compound. The reaction products are then hydrolyzed by an esterase enzyme to form acetylcholine and chloride ions, which can stimulate nerve cells. 2,5-Dimethylbenzyl chloride also reacts with choline, which is involved in the production of acetylcholine.
