Delta dodecalactone is a chiral molecule that has been shown to have microbicidal properties against pyogenic bacteria in vitro. It has also been shown to be an effective treatment for head lice, which are the result of infestation by the parasitic species Pediculus humanus capitis. Delta dodecalactone's mechanism of action is unknown, but it may be due to inhibition of fatty acid synthesis or interference with cell membranes.
Delta dodecalactone is a product of the esterification and condensation reactions between caproic acid and methyl anthranilate. This product can be used as a starting material for industrial preparations, such as wetting agents, emulsifiers, and foam stabilizers.
