Dihydroxythiophenol is a chemical that is used in the production of cellulose. It can be used to measure the pH of a solution, which is made by adding a small amount of dihydroxythiophenol to a test solution containing an acetyl group. This chemical binds to the surface of the electrode and forms a self-assembled monolayer, which changes its electrical properties as a function of pH. The self-assembled monolayer has been shown to be stable for days at room temperature and up to weeks at low temperatures. Dihydroxythiophenol can be used as an alternative to l-ascorbic acid in this type of assay because it does not interfere with the reaction between acetyl groups and hydrogen ions.
