2,2-Dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1-benzofuran is an organic compound that has a structure consisting of a benzene ring with two methyl groups on the adjacent carbons. It is a colorless liquid at room temperature and has an odor similar to that of gasoline. 2,2-Dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1-benzofuran is used as an analog for carbofuran and as a solvent in organic synthesis. It has been shown to cause cancer in animal studies and has been shown to cause liver cancer in humans. 2,2-Dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1-benzofuran can react with chloride ions to form alkyl halides such as chloromethane and dichloromethane. This reaction occurs at temperatures above the boiling point of water.
