4,6-Dimethyl-2-methylsulfonylpyrimidine (DMSP) is a chemical compound that is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of ambrisentan. DMSP can be prepared by reacting hydrochloric acid with 2-methylthioethanol and heating the mixture to about 160 °C. DMSP has been shown to bind to the endothelin-A receptor and may have antihypertensive properties. Validation studies have been carried out on DMSP using various chromatographic methods, including gas chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography, and thin layer chromatography. The results of these studies show that DMSP is a stable compound which does not react with oxygen or light when it is stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 12 months. DMSP also does not react with propionate, which makes it suitable for recycling.
