4,6-Dimethyl-2-oxo-2H-pyran-5-carboxylic acid (DMPC) is a product of the condensation reaction between formaldehyde and acetaldehyde. It is used in pharmaceutical preparations as an excipient in tablet formulations. DMPC has been found to be a precursor for the synthesis of many other organic compounds, including polyvinyl chloride and aliphatic hydrocarbons. It may be used as a starting material for the production of 4,6-dimethylmorpholine and amines. The optimal reaction temperature for DMPC is between 100°C and 200°C.
