2,4-Dimethyl-6-nitrophenyl)amine (DMPN) is an aromatic amine that is used as a reagent for the detection of nitro groups. It can be prepared by reacting 2,4-dimethylphenol with nitric acid. DMPN reacts with fatty acids in the presence of sodium disulfite to form a disulfonate. It also reacts with anilines to form a sulfonate. The melting point of this compound is around 180°C and it has a boiling point of 230°C at atmospheric pressure. This compound can be obtained as either the sodium salt or the trioxide form, depending on how it was made. When heated in an evaporating vessel, DMPN decomposes into nitrous oxide and sulfur dioxide. DMPN is reactive towards amines and forms amino derivatives when exposed to temperatures over 160°C.
