4,5-Dimethylpyrimidin-2-ol hydrochloride is a copper complex that is used for the treatment of wastewater containing epidermal growth factor. It is also used as a nutrient solution for plants and to treat malonic acid in industrial processes. 4,5-Dimethylpyrimidin-2-ol hydrochloride can be prepared by reacting malonic acid with hydrogen chloride to produce 4,5-dimethylpyrimidin-2-ol chloride. This compound has been shown to inhibit growth of streptococcus faecalis at an optimum concentration of 2×10 Molar (M). Menadione is an analog of vitamin K that has been shown to bind to Cu(II) ions at the active site of epidermal growth factor (EGF) and act as a competitive inhibitor. The metal chelate form of menadione binds tightly to copper ions and inhibits the EGF receptor tyrosine kinase activity.
