Dimethyl 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylate is an aromatic hydrocarbon that is used in a variety of industrial applications. It is synthesized by the reaction of acetic acid and naphthalene. Dimethyl 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylate may be used as a model system for studying the reactions of other aromatic compounds. It has been shown to react with diphenyl ethers to form esters and with fatty acids to form carboxylic acid derivatives. The oxidation of dimethyl 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylate with a catalyst such as palladium or platinum yields phenol products.
