It is effective against syncytial viruses and prostate cancer cells. 1,3-Dichloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin binds to a hydroxyl group on the surface of cells. This binding disrupts the function of the cell membrane and leads to cell death by apoptosis or necrosis. 1,3-Dichloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin can also bind to receptors for growth factors (e.g., epidermal growth factor) and enzymes (e.g., aminopeptidases). This binding inhibits their activity and slows down or stops the production of proteins in the cell.
