1,4-Dibromo-2-methylbenzene is a c6 alkyl bromide used in pharmaceutical formulations as an intermediate for the synthesis of a variety of compounds. The compound is prepared by the Suzuki coupling reaction between 1,4-dibromobenzene and methyl Grignard reagent. This process produces chlorine atoms as byproducts. In addition to its use in pharmaceutical formulations, 1,4-dibromo-2-methylbenzene has been found to inhibit the growth of bacteria by interfering with intracellular calcium concentration.
1,4-Dibromo-2-methylbenzene reacts with fluorine gas in organic solvents such as chloroform or tetrahydrofuran to form 1,3,5 tri(bromomethyl)benzene (1) and 1,3 dibromomethylbenzene (2). These products are then reacted
