2,4-Dimethoxy-1-nitrobenzene is a synthetic compound that is reactive to both heat and light. It can be made by the reaction of nitric acid with aniline and sodium nitrite in the presence of hydrochloric acid. The crystals are unreactive with strong acids, but react with water to form 2,4-dinitroanisole. 2,4-Dimethoxy-1-nitrobenzene has been shown to be an excellent nucleophile and can be used as a reagent for the synthesis of other organic compounds. The nitro group is a good leaving group that can be displaced by a variety of nucleophilic reagents. This compound also has surface properties that make it useful for sedimentation experiments.
