1,9-Dichlorononane is an azobenzene that can be activated by dehalogenase. It is a colorless liquid that has a pungent odor. 1,9-Dichlorononane has been shown to be able to inhibit the growth of bacteria in the lab and can be applied as a disinfectant. It binds to chloride ions in the bacterial cell wall and disrupts its structure by breaking down fatty acids. The breakdown products of 1,9-dichlorononane are butyric acid and chloride ions. The halogens released from 1,9-dichlorononane are chlorine and bromine which act as disinfectants themselves by oxidizing microorganisms. In addition, 1,9-dichlorononane degrades under UV light to release ozone which also acts as a disinfectant.
