4,5-Dibromo-2-furoic acid is a furan that inhibits the tyrosine kinase enzyme. It has been shown to be an inhibitor of the chloride channel and to have anti-epileptic effects in animal models. 4,5-Dibromo-2-furoic acid also has a photooxidation effect, which may lead to its inhibitory activity against tyrosine kinase. This compound is structurally related to vigabatrin, an antiepileptic drug that is used in the treatment of epilepsy in humans and animals. Vigabatrin acts by inhibiting GABA transaminase, leading to increased levels of GABA and elevated seizure threshold. 4,5-Dibromo-2-furoic acid also inhibits sesterterpenoid synthase, which leads to the production of sesterterpenoids with antiinflammatory properties.
