Diisopropyl malonate is an organic compound that is used as a cross-linker in polymer synthesis. Diisopropyl malonate reacts with diethyl succinate to form an active methylene, which reacts with other molecules to form polymers. The active methylene can be prepared by reacting malonic acid with diethyl succinate in the presence of a catalyst such as palladium (II) chloride. This reaction produces polycarboxylic acid, which can then be used for synthesizing polymers. Diisopropyl malonate is also used as a solid catalyst for reactions involving carboxylic acids and amines.
