3,5-Dinitrobenzyl alcohol is a synthetic compound that is used to synthesize other chemicals. It can be used in industrial processes as an efficient method for the synthesis of potassium thioacetate. 3,5-Dinitrobenzyl alcohol reacts with chloride to form ethyl esters and potassium chloride. This reaction can be enhanced by UV light. The product can be desorbed from the surface of the solid using a technique called uv-absorption. This method has been shown to be efficient for the synthesis of potassium thioacetate. 3,5-Dinitrobenzyl alcohol also absorbs UV light and has been used in gel permeation chromatography techniques for the separation of compounds.
