3,4-Diiodobenzoic acid is a yellow crystalline solid that has been used in the treatment of calculi in the bile and urinary calculi. It has been shown to be effective in reducing the concentration of calcium oxalate crystals and inhibiting their aggregation. 3,4-Diiodobenzoic acid can be used as an optical probe for virus detection, with a wavelength of 350 nm. This compound also has antiviral activity against several viruses, including herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2). The antiviral activity may be due to its ability to bind to viral DNA or RNA.
