Diethylpyridine-2,3-dicarboxylate (DEP) is a synthetic chemical that is used as a herbicide. It has a long reaction time and is sensitive to light and heat. DEP can be oxidized to produce biphenyl. DEP can react with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of oxygen to produce diethyl ester. The environmental impact of DEP is not well known, but it is suspected that it may have carcinogenic properties due to its ability to cause mutations in calf-thymus DNA and its ability to produce quinones.
