3,4-Dibromobenzaldehyde is a synthetic compound that can be used in the preparation of other organic compounds. It can undergo a cross-coupling reaction with an alkene to produce a substituted benzene derivative. 3,4-Dibromobenzaldehyde can also undergo UV irradiation to produce photochromism by converting from the cis form to the trans form. This compound has been shown to have optical properties that change with light and temperature. 3,4-Dibromobenzaldehyde is an isomeric compound that contains two different enantiomers in equal proportions and is optically active. The racemic mixture of this compound can be switched from one enantiomer to another by applying heat or light, which is referred to as rationalization. 3,4-Dibromobenzaldehyde has been observed in red blood cells and has been used as an indicator for red blood cell viability.
