4,4'-Dicyanostilbene is a stilbene derivative that has been used as a photoinitiator in radical polymerization. The elimination of the methyl group from 4,4'-dicyanostilbene to form 3-methyl-2-phenylindane is characterized by a mass spectrum with an m/z of 155.7 and an m/z of 112.5. This product has been shown to have a cyclohexane ring structure with phenanthrene substituents on each benzene ring. 4,4'-Dicyanostilbene can be used as an initiator for free radical polymerization reactions such as polyester synthesis or polyurethane production.
