This compound is used in the lab to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms. 2,3-Dimethyl-1,3-benzothiazol-3-ium,4-methylbenzene-1sulfonate can be synthesized from ferrocene and its optical properties can be modified by substituting the sulfur atom with other heterocycles such as thiophene or benzothiazole. The fluorescence of this compound can be further enhanced by protonation or by attaching a fluorescent probe such as rhodamine B.
