It can be synthesized by reacting methoxy with chloride in the presence of a base (e.g., sodium hydroxide) and brominating the resulting 1,2-dibromoethane with bromine. The compound has been used as an analytical standard for natural gas and has been shown to have good trackability. 1,3-Dibromonaphthalene is used in research, primarily as a precursor to other compounds that are more reactive or less toxic. This molecule has been shown to undergo elimination reactions with alcohols and phenols, which can be useful for synthesis of other molecules.
