(E)-Dimethyl hex-2-enedioate is a hydrogenated, oxysterol that has been shown to be a reactive and synthetic chemical. It is synthesized from benzonitrile, which is reacted with chloromethyl methyl ether and ethyl acetate in the presence of 1 equivalent of sodium chloride. The product can then be purified with methanol as the solvent. (E)-Dimethyl hex-2-enedioate has been shown to have affinity for dopamine D3 receptors, and has been used in kinetic and biological studies. This compound is also an example of a bioisostere, which are compounds that share similar chemical structures but differ in their functional groups.
