2,6-Dihydroxy-5-fluoro-3-cyanopyridine is a reagent that is synthesized from malonate. It reacts with metal salt in the presence of catalytic fluoropyridine to form an ester compound. This process occurs under mild conditions and provides high yield. 2,6-Dihydroxy-5-fluoro-3-cyanopyridine has been shown to be effective against pollution that is caused by chlorination. The ability of this compound to react with chlorinating agents makes it suitable for use as a water treatment agent. 2,6-Dihydroxy-5-fluoro-3-cyanopyridine has also been found to be effective in the synthesis of fluoroquinolones.
