2,2-Diphenylacetaldehyde is a reactive chemical that reacts with oxygen to produce light. The reaction is chemiluminescent and can be detected by measuring the intensity of light emission. This chemical has been used in fluorescence spectrometry to detect fatty acids and as a probe for kinetic data. 2,2-Diphenylacetaldehyde has also been shown to have reactive properties when exposed to light and may be used as an indicator of oxidative injury. It will react with sodium carbonate in the presence of hydroxyl groups or nitrogen atoms. The redox potential of this compound is -0.23 volts.
