2,4-Dibromo-1,5-dimethyl-1H-imidazole is a diagnostic agent that can be used to measure acetylcholine levels in patients. This drug is also used as a supplement for the treatment of a variety of conditions including Parkinson's disease. 2,4-Dibromo-1,5-dimethyl-1H-imidazole is not bioequivalent to acetylcholine because it binds to muscarinic receptors in the brain and causes a sequence effect. It affects the central nervous system by blocking the release of acetylcholine from neurons in the brain and spinal cord. 2,4-Dibromo-1,5-dimethyl-1H-imidazole has been shown to have pharmacologic effects on the gastrointestinal tract and biliary tract as well as on the intestines and liver of infants.
