5,7-Dihydroxy-3',4',5'-trimethoxyflavanone is a flavonoid that can inhibit bacterial growth. It has been shown to inhibit the biosynthesis of fatty acids in gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Cerulenin by inhibiting the enzymes involved in fatty acid synthesis. This inhibition may be due to the activation of energy-dependent bacterial resistance mechanisms. 5,7-Dihydroxy-3',4',5'-trimethoxyflavanone also inhibits fatty acid biosynthesis in human cells (Homo sapiens) and may have potential therapeutic use for neonatal sepsis. This active form is an unsaturated fatty acid, which is synthesized from two acetate molecules and one malonyl group. The family name for this substance is Catechins.
