Di-tert-butyl oxalate is a potential mechanism for inhibiting the HIV integrase enzyme. It has been shown to bind to the active site of the enzyme, blocking the catalytic site and preventing it from functioning. Di-tert-butyl oxalate has been synthesized by reacting two molecules of threonine with one molecule of acetonitrile in an acidified solution. This reaction yields aldehydes and thianthrene as reaction products. The di-tert-butyl oxalate molecule is stable at room temperature but decomposes at higher temperatures, such as those used during the synthesis process.
