3-[(3,4-Dimethyl-9-oxo-9H-thioxanthen-2-yl)oxy]-2-hydroxypropyl]trimethylammonium chloride (DMTAC) is a reactive light absorbing molecule. In the presence of light, DMTAC rapidly absorbs radiation and returns to its ground state. This process is known as photoreaction. DMTAC’s absorption of radiation has been shown to increase with the number of hydroxyl groups on the molecule. Reaction solution for DMTAC is deionized water in which DMTAC molecules are dissolved and then reacted with trimethylamine chloride. The monocarboxylic acid group reacts with the hydroxyl group on the DMTAC molecule to form a new functional group known as carboxylic acid.
