2,4-Dichlorobenzhydrazide is a chemical compound that contains a chelate ring and a nitroalkane group. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by reacting with the bacterial cell wall and binding to the enzyme mycolic acid synthase. This inhibits the synthesis of mycolic acid, which is necessary for cell wall biosynthesis. 2,4-Dichlorobenzhydrazide also inhibits tuberculosis by inhibiting protein synthesis and DNA replication. The antimycobacterial activity of this drug has been shown in vitro using a titration method, which measures its ability to inhibit growth of Mycobacterium smegmatis.
