1,2-Distearoyl-rac-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine is a cationic surfactant that belongs to the class of phospholipids. It has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of the uptake and activity of vasoactive intestinal peptide. When mixed with an organic solvent, 1,2-distearoyl-rac-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine undergoes a phase transition at a temperature below room temperature. This property makes it useful as a sample preparation fluid in confocal microscopy, where it can be used to remove lipid from samples and prepare them for imaging.
