Dithiodiglycolic Acid is a cationic surfactant that is used in the treatment of autoimmune diseases. Dithiodiglycolic acid has been shown to be an effective suppressor of autoimmune disorders. It is thought that this may be due to the ability of dithiodiglycolic acid to react with basic proteins, such as lysyl hydroxylase, which are involved in the synthesis of collagen and elastin. The molecule is also reactive, which could contribute to its anti-inflammatory effects. Dithiodiglycolic Acid has been shown to inhibit liver cell growth and increase liver cell death. This may be due to its ability to react with hydroxyl groups on molecules that are important for protein synthesis, such as cysteine residues on basic proteins.
