Descrição:D-Penicillamine is a drug that is used to treat chronic inflammatory bowel disease and rheumatoid arthritis. The drug binds to the enzyme glutathione reductase, which converts oxidized glutathione back into its reduced form. This reaction prevents the formation of reactive oxygen species, which are harmful to cells. D-penicillamine also inhibits the production of cytokines, such as IL-1β and TNF-α, which are involved in inflammation. D-penicillamine may be used in combination with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for the treatment of chronic arthritis because it reduces NSAID toxicity by binding to NSAIDs and preventing them from forming toxic metabolites.
