1,4-Diacetylpiperazine-2,5-dione is an unsymmetrical molecule that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the pBR322 plasmid. It has been shown that 1,4-DAP binds to the DNA of pBR322 and prevents it from being replicated. This compound also inhibits the formation of acetic acid and aldehydes in hydrochloric acid. This compound can be used as a template molecule for the synthesis of other compounds which have inhibitory activities against bacteria. The 1,4-DAP can be synthesized using microwaves or ultrasonically. Zinc powder is required as a catalyst for this reaction. The stereoselective synthesis of this molecule is possible because it contains two chiral centers.
